U S West Phone Service Blocked
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ More than 150,000 calls in two states were blocked Monday because of a glitch in a U S West computer.
Technicians isolated and were fixing the hardware problem, which began about 5 a.m. and sporadically affected telephone service. Service was expected to be restored by Monday night.
The problem, which disrupted local, long-distance and cellular phone calls, was isolated to Iowa and eastern Nebraska, U S West said. Emergency 911 service is run on a different switch and did not appear to be affected.
The interruption was not the biggest in the company’s history but was termed a major outage by U S West.
