Watertown’s second half rally falls just short against SPASH
STEVENS POINT — Madisyn Rogan scored 23 points and Leah Earnest added 20 as tournament host Stevens Point held off Watertown’s girls basketball team on Thursday night at the Sentry Classic.
Stevens Point (7-3) led 35-27 at halftime and held on late for the win.
Watertown (8-2) closed to within one point on a late 3-pointer by senior guard Brianna Hendricks. The Goslings got the ball back and had a look but turned it over. They got one more chance trailing by three in the closing seconds and couldn’t convert.
“We could not get anything to fall most of the game, but our defensive effort led to a comeback,” Watertown girls basketball coach Matt Stollberg said. “We got some stops and got some shots to fall. We came all the way back against a really good team with a couple Division 1 kids. We showed a lot of heart and came up just short.”
Senior guard Jenna Koepp led four Goslings in double figures with 20 points. She made three of her five 3-pointers in the second half. Sophomore forward Teya Maas poured in 16 points. Sophomore guard Aubrey Schmutzler added 14 and Hendricks added 10.
“Jenna hit some 3s, Aubrey was getting to the rim a lot and Teya did a good job finishing in the second half,” Stollberg said.
“All our posts did a good job rebounding. Teya and (senior forwards) Rachel Moldenhauer and Bri Korducki got a lot of rebounds. They were tough defensively as well.”
Watertown plays the second and final game of the Sentry Classic today at 1:45 p.m. against defending Division 4 state champion La Crosse Aquinas. The Blugolds have won 65 of their last 66 games.
“They are the real deal,” Stollberg said. “I went to La Crosse (to scout) them two Saturdays ago. We’ll be ready. It’s a matter of if we can have a good showing.”
