Texas lockup is epicenter of family immigration detention

August 10, 2018

DILLEY, Texas (AP) — The Dilley family immigration lockup in rural South Texas has become an epicenter for immigration policies that the Trump administration has tried to tighten.

Currently housing 1,520 mothers and their children, about 10 percent are families who were temporarily separated under a “zero tolerance policy” that has since been reversed.

Federal authorities say the detention center is informal whenever possible and accommodating to families. But advocates counter that problems remain.

U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement allowed a small group of reporters to tour the facility for several hours on Thursday, and both sides of the debate were on full display.
