Cracked pipe leads to closure of Baraboo Indoor Pool until Monday

May 1, 2019

The Baraboo Indoor Pool will be closed until Monday after a pipe cracked late last week.

Brackets that supported the heat exchange system for the Jack Young Middle School pool gave way Friday, causing the system to drop about 2 feet and stressing the attached pipes, said Aquatics Director Heather Wood. That resulted in one of the “major pipelines” to crack.

“The pool itself is 21 years old, so we’ve been really fortunate that this is the first time that anything like this has happened to us,” Wood said.

While the school district’s maintenance department responded quickly, Wood said they’re now waiting on a private contractor to get a replacement pipe for the damaged section. Until it’s fixed, the system can’t run because it can’t circulate water.

All pool programs have been canceled since Saturday, including water aerobics, swimming lessons, team practices and physical education classes. The pool will be closed until Monday, though it could reopen sooner if the problem is resolved before then, according to Wood.

“It’s a huge bump in the road for our pool programs for this week for sure, and hopefully they can fix it as quickly as possible so we can reschedule all these pool programs,” Wood said.

Between families that use the pool, students and other patrons, she estimated hundreds of people have been impacted by the closure.
