NASCAR: Monster Energy Cup Series practice notes from Richmond Raceway

September 23, 2018

Whatever magic Brad Keselowski’s Team Penske team discovered over the past month seems to have followed him to Richmond Raceway.

Keselowski led the final Cup practice Friday afternoon with a lap of 120.224 mph after ranking 14th in the first session (119.649). Kyle Busch, the active leader at the track with five Cup wins, led the first practice (121.190) and was 18th in the final session (118.028).

Among other notable names needing good finishes Saturday: Manchester High graduate Denny Hamlin was 20th (119.316) and 23rd (117.755); seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson was 25th (119.126) and 27th (117.586); and Chase Elliott was 15th (119.633) and 29th (117.453). All are below the cut line with two races remaining in the Round of 16.

Worth noting: The track saw sunshine peering through the clouds, so the temperatures figure to be cooler tomorrow night during the race.
