Fire heavily damages Chardon auto repair business

CHARDON, Ohio — A fire late Thursday night caused extensive damage to an auto body and collision business.

Firefighters were still battling hot spots at Chardon Square Auto and Body Collision at 537 Water St. early Friday morning and they expected to remain at the site throughout the night, Chardon Chief Larry Gaspar said.

The fire was reported at about 10:20 p.m. when a police officer on patrol spotted heavy smoke coming from the building, Gaspar said.

When firefighters arrived, they tried to go inside but were forced back by heavy flames, he said.

Thirteen departments responded to the two-alarm fire. Gaspar said the building had a wooden-pitched roof built over a flat roof. The pitched roof collapsed on the flat roof, making it difficult to reach flames in-between.

“We’re having a hard time getting water into that area to completely extinguish the fire,” Gaspar said.

Firefighters also were concerned about flammable liquids inside the building, Gaspar said.

There were no reports of injuries. Gaspar said the cause of the fire was unknown but the Ohio Fire Marshal’s Office and the Geauga County Fire Investigation Unit will investigate.
