WACO, Texas (AP) _ Dave Roberts, offensive coordinator under Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, was hired as Baylor's football coach on Thursday.

Roberts, who also was a candidate for jobs at Minnesota and Division I-AA Western Carolina, worked at Notre Dame for the past three years. He declined an offer to remain at the school after Holtz's recent resignation.

In previous stops as coach at Western Kentucky and Northeast Louisiana, Roberts had a 10-year record of 63-50-3 with five playoff appearances.

Roberts, 49, replaces Chuck Reedy, who was fired Nov. 24, one day after a blowout loss that left the Bears at 4-7, their worst record since 1978. Baylor finished last in its first season in the Big 12 South.

Navy football coach Charlie Weatherbie also was a candidate, but decided earlier this week he was no longer interested. That left Murray State's Houston Nutt and Roberts as the top candidates, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported Thursday.

Weatherbie, 41, who coached navy into the Aloha Bowl this season, decided Wednesday night after interviewing with Baylor president Robert Sloan and athletic director Tom Stanton on Tuesday.

At Western Kentucky, Roberts was 26-30-1, with his last two teams going 7-4 and 9-4. At Northeast Louisiana, Roberts' teams went to the Division I-AA playoffs in three of his last four years and won the Southland Conference title in 1990 and 1992, when he was named conference and national coach of the year.

While Roberts was at Notre Dame, the Irish appeared in the Fiesta and Orange bowls.

From 1979 to 1983, Roberts worked on the Vanderbilt staff that brought the school's program to a bowl game. He was assistant at Davidson from 1973-89 and at Eastern Kentucky in 1972.
