Dow Recovering Before the Bell

NEW YORK (AP) _ Stocks tumbled today, with the Dow Jones industrial average at one point falling about 283 points as investors reacted to turmoil in financial markets and new political tensions around the world.

Just before the close on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 81 points at 8,529, bouncing back from its earlier lows but still extending the 103 point loss from the previous two days.

Broader indicators also fell today, with the biggest losses coming in the Nasdaq composite index.
