HAZLETON — A 20-year-old woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of her 7-month-old son. Anyi Paola Medina Arias, 111 N. Laurel St., Hazleton, is also charged with a felony of recklessly endangering a child and misdemeanor charges of making false reports to authorities and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said. Police went to a residence at 12:29 a.m. Monday after receiving a call from a woman who said something was wrong with her child. They found a naked infant, pale and unresponsive on a bed, according to an affidavit of probable cause. Police tried without success to resuscitate the child, who was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton, where life-saving attempts continued for approximately two more hours before the boy was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. When police interviewed Medina Arias, she changed her story several times, according to police. In one version, she said the boy drowned during a bath. She also said water entered the boy’s mouth when she took him into the shower. In another version, she told of finding a substance in a bag while leaving a bar. She brought the bag home, put her finger into the bag and tasted the substance, which was bitter, before mistakenly putting her finger in the baby’s mouth to check him for teething. Police executed a search warrant and found a tube sock containing small black paper bags used to package heroin between a mattress and box springs in the mother’s bedroom, which she shared with the child. Police asked for a high bail because they consider Medina Arias a flight risk. Magisterial District Judge Joseph Zola of Hazleton sent her to Luzerne County prison without bail. A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Dec. 4 before Zola. Contact the writer: jdino@standardspeaker.com 570-501-3585
