Six killed in explosion at illegal Philippine fireworks factory
MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ An explosion at an illegal factory where New Year’s Eve fireworks were being made killed six people and critically injured two others, police said today.
Workers at the small factory apparently were mixing chemicals when a bottle fell, setting off the explosion, San Ildefonso police said.
The two injured people both received third-degree burns, they said.
Bulacan Police Director Noe Wong said police were investigating unconfirmed reports that some of the workers had been drinking before the accident.
Many of the fireworks used by Filipinos to celebrate the new year are assembled in small backyard factories in Bulacan. It was the ninth explosion of fireworks materials this year in Bulacan province north of Manila.
