Lemieux Throws First Pirates’ Pitch
PITTSBURGH (AP) _ Pittsburgh fans finally got their wish: Mario Lemieux was back in uniform again.
Only it wasn’t a Penguins’ uniform, but rather the Pirates’ _ No. 66, of course.
Lemieux, the former Penguins star who has only infrequently appeared in public since his retirement, was presented a black Pirates uniform by managing general partner Kevin McClatchy before the team’s home opener Tuesday.
Lemieux also showed he knows how to handle a baseball, not just a hockey stick, by throwing a low and away strike to catcher Jason Kendall on the ceremonial first pitch.
Lemieux, who did not speak to reporters Tuesday, recently said since he retired last summer he has spent most of his time playing golf and raising his four children. He has watched only a handful of Penguins games.
