DOE received ‘proposals’ for next SRS security contract, site manager says

Competition for the next Savannah River Site paramilitary security contract is shaping up.

More than one proposal for the contract has been submitted, according to public comments made by SRS manager Michael Budney.

“Those proposals were actually received last week, and now we’ll go through the process of reviewing those and making a determination,” Budney said May 13, speaking before the Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board.

Specific questions about the proposals – exactly how many were submitted and what companies were involved, for example – could not be answered, a U.S. Department of Energy spokesperson said, citing procurement sensitivity.

The pitches were received May 7, according to a procurement spreadsheet maintained by the DOE Office of Environmental Management. Environmental Management is the SRS landlord.

The chosen security contractor is charged with protecting SRS – its borders, its personnel, its facilities and its sensitive materials – around the clock as well as conducting police work and investigations, among other things.

The potential 10-year contract has an estimated value of up to $1 billion, according to a DOE announcement.

An award is expected to be made between August and October, according to the procurement document, which was last updated May 10.

Centerra-SRS is the current paramilitary security contractor at the Site, and has been for years. The team’s contract expires in October.

A spokesperson for Centerra-SRS both last year and earlier this year said the group intends to bid for the newest contract.

“Yes, our corporate office will submit a proposal to continue our important job of protecting SRS security interests in accordance with the same high standards we have demonstrated for over 35 years,” the spokesperson explained at the time.

An inquiry made to Centerra-SRS, a subsidiary of Centerra Group, was referred to its corporate headquarters. A response was not immediately provided Thursday.
