Busch Drives to Arizona Victory
Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Cup Series race at ISM Raceway, tracking down Ryan Blaney over a long green-flag run and passing for the lead with 16 laps to go to complete a weekend sweep near Phoenix in Avondale, Ariz.
Busch drove to victory in the Xfinity race Saturday before stretching his fuel to the finish Sunday.
Martin Truex Jr. also got around Blaney to finish second, and Blaney finished third after starting on the pole. Aric Almirola was fourth and Denny Hamlin was fifth.
Buffalo Sabres forward Jack Eichel was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL on Sunday for an illegal check to the head of Colorado Avalanche forward Carl Soderberg.
Eichel, a North Chelmsford native, was assessed a minor penalty for the illegal check in the second period of the Sabres’ 3-0 loss at Colorado on Saturday. The suspension will cost him $107,527. The 22-year-old center has 25 goals and 47 assists in 65 games this season.
NHL Hall of Fame defenseman Harry Howell, who played the most games in New York Rangers’ history, has died. He was 86.
A seven-time All-Star, Howell played 1,160 games for the Rangers from 1952-69 and had his No. 3 retired by the team. Known for his smart, steady play, “Harry the Horse” won the Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman in 1966-67. He finished with 94 goals and 324 assists in the NHL and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979.
Molinari wins with a 64
British Open champion Francesco Molinari rolled in a 45-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Bay Hill that capped off an 8-under 64, taking him from five shots behind to a two-shot victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
Matt Fitzpatrick managed only two birdies in his round of 71 to finish second. Defending champ Rory McIlroy started the final round one shot behind and never got anything going in his round of 72.
Chiefs release Houston
The Kansas City Chiefs released veteran linebacker Justin Houston after they were unable to drum up enough trade interest, ending the tenure of one of the best pass rushers in club history.
The Chiefs had made it clear they would trade or release Houston this offseason, primarily because of his cost. He was due $15.25 million and carried a salary cap hit of $21.1 million.
Hirscher cruises to title
Marcel Hirscher wrapped up his eighth consecutive men’s World Cup overall title, one week before the season ends. The Austrian placed third in the penultimate slalom of the season, extending his lead to 509 points over second-place Alexis Pinturault of France, with only four events at next week’s World Cup Finals remaining.
Olympic track cyclist Kelly Catlin, who helped the U.S. women’s pursuit team win the silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, died Friday at her home in California. She was 23. Catlin’s father, Mark Catlin, told VeloNews that his daughter killed herself.
... Highly touted Toronto Blue Jays prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will miss the next three weeks because of a strained left oblique. ... A spectator ran onto the field and threw a punch at Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish’s face during a derby game at Birmingham City. The incident happened less than 10 minutes into the second-tier Championship game in central England when Grealish was in the Birmingham penalty area. The fan ran from behind Grealish and swung his right arm at the midfielder, striking the side of his head.
