US, West Virginia flags lowered on anniversary of 9/11

September 11, 2019

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Jim Justice is ordering flags to half-staff in remembrance of the people who died in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The Republican governor has signed a proclamation to lower the U.S. and West Virginia flags on state buildings Wednesday.

Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Scores of firefighters, police and others have died in the years since from exposure to the toxic wreckage from the attack.

It was the deadliest terrorist act on American soil.

Justice says the proclamation is meant to pay tribute to people who were killed.
