Honecker Recovering Well After Receiving Pacemaker
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) _ Former East German Communist ruler Erich Honecker was recovering well Wednesday after receiving a pacemaker the day before, his doctor said.
The private Las Condes clinic said Honecker, 81, hasn’t had new esposides of loss of consciousness such as the ones that prompted his emergency hospitalization Sunday.
Honecker, who suffers from terminal liver cancer, may be released by Friday, said Dr. Pedro Cubillos, the clinic’s medical director.
Cubillos said Honecker was ″in an excellent mood″ and fully conscious.
The pacemaker has corrected Honecker’s irregular heartbeat and he was in satisfactory condition, the clinic said in a statement.
The heart condition is unrelated to the liver cancer, doctors said.
Honecker came to Chile in January after a Berlin court, citing his poor health, stopped his trial for the deaths of East Germans killed trying to escape to the West during his Communist rule.
