Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center to deliver teddy bears to patients this holiday season
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is making sure anyone who needs to spend their holiday season in a hospital gets a teddy bear from someone who cares.
One of the blood center’s most popular events Holiday Hugs gives blood donors an opportunity to brighten up a blood recipient’s holiday with a teddy bear and a heartwarming message.
“Being in the hospital can be difficult, especially during the holidays,” Joshua Buckley, Gulf Coast’s media and promotions coordinator said. “This program simply helps put a smile on the faces of many patients during a special time of the year.”
Around 1,500 teddy bears are distributed across the gulf coast last year. One of the blood center’s delivery stops is Memorial Hermann Northeast.
The blood center purchases all of the teddy bears and has a volunteer party to attach the cards to the bears. During the month of December, volunteers join the Reindeer Brigade to deliver to several hospitals in the area.
“Seeing the smile on a patient’s face when we deliver a teddy bear to them is priceless. It really makes you understand how special it is to donate blood and help save and sustain lives,” Buckley said.
