SBCISD’s Garcia named ambassador for educating youth
SAN BENITO — From academic help and homework tutoring to ballroom dancing and robotics, Jack Garcia has seen the positive influence that after-school programs have on students.
Now, he gets to build awareness throughout the state and on a national level as one of 15 Afterschool Ambassadors selected by the Washington, D.C.,-based Afterschool Alliance.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled about this great opportunity to help build the after-school movement,” Garcia said in a press release. “I’m looking forward to a terrific year working to get the word out about all the great things happening in after-school programs, here and across the state.”
As director of the San Benito CISD Afterschool Program, Garcia has worked in after-school programs for 20 years. Since 1999, more than 10,000 students have received tutorials and exposure to electives, such as gardening, chess, photography, music, animation and theatre, as part of the Afterschool Centers of Education at San Benito CISD.
“I’ve seen after-school change children’s lives — broadening horizons, connecting them to their communities and to caring adults,” Garcia said.
As an Afterschool Ambassador, Garcia will be tasked with organizing public events, communicating with policy makers and building awareness of ways to develop and grow after-school programs. The term lasts for one year.
Garcia will also be in charge of planning a local event for “Lights on Afterschool,” an annual Afterschool Alliance community rally that occurs throughout the country. The rally is scheduled for Oct. 25.
“We’re thrilled that Mr. Garcia will serve as an Afterschool Ambassador this year,” Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant said in a press release. “He will mobilize parents, educators and business, community and faith leaders, among others, to help safeguard funding for the after-school programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help give working families peace of mind.”
