Warren, Gonzalez to Rally for 3rd District Candidate Trahan in Lowell

LOWELL -- With the general-election season now well underway, prominent statewide Democratic candidates will head to the Mill City on Friday to rally in support of newly named 3rd Congressional District nominee Lori Trahan.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Democratic gubenatorial nominee Jay Gonzalez will headline the rally at the UMass Lowell Inn and Conference Center, according to a press release from the Massachusetts Democratic party. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

“There is so much work to be done to hold the Trump Administration accountable and level the playing field for working families in Massachusetts -- that’s why I’m proud to support a strong, compassionate leader like Lori,” Warren said in the press release. “Lori’s commitment and work on behalf of the people of the 3rd District make her the best person to fill the big shoes left behind by Niki Tsongas.”

Trahan was officially declared the Democratic nominee in the 3rd District race on Monday, 13 days after the primary election, once a hand recount wrapped up and found her to win by 145 votes.

She will now face Republican Rick Green in the Nov. 6 general election.

Her opponents in the primary and Tsongas herself all rallied in support of Trahan on Tuesday, and Friday’s event will bring in other prominent Democrats. The two most high-profile attendees face contested elections themselves, Warren against Republican Geoff Diehl and Gonzalez a challenge against the popular incumbent Republican Gov. Charlie Baker.

“Lori embodies the values of hard work, community, and collaboration that are so necessary in Washington,” Gonzalez said in a press release. “Right now, Massachusetts must be a leader in the fight to create affordable educational opportunities for every resident, to jumpstart an economy that works for everyone, and to build a reliable and affordable transportation system, among many other priorities. Lori’s experience and deep connection to her community will make her the most effective advocate for the people of the 3rd District, and add another strong progressive voice to the Massachusetts delegation.”
