Inmate with Advanced AIDS Commits Suicide
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ An AIDS-stricken inmate jailed for failing to post bond on two shoplifting charges hanged himself, according to a prison spokesman.
A guard found Gerald Duva, 28, of Providence hanging from a bedsheet tied to the top hinge of his cell door Saturday night, said Joseph DiNitto, spokesman for the Adult Correction Institutions.
Duva, who was in an advanced stage of the always-fatal acquired immune deficiency syndrome, was in isolation in the hospital ward and was being checked every 30 minutes because of his medical condition, DiNitto said.
Duva was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital about an hour after he was found.
