Three Killed When Storm Topples Tree On Car
PIEDMONT, Ala. (AP) _ A couple and their son were killed when gusting winds toppled a huge tree onto their car, the county coroner said.
Gene Lockridge Sr., his wife Shirley, 40, and their son Gene Jr., 10, were killed instantly about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the tree fell onto their car as it traveled down a tree-lined street of this northern Alabama community, said Calhoun County Coroner David Dawson.
Dawson said the tree trunk measured about eight feet in diameter.
A fourth passenger, whom Dawson refused to identify, was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital with injuries the coroner described as not life-threatening.
A spokesman for the National Weather Service in Birmingham said the storm system moved across the northern half of the state Saturday afternoon, knocking down tree limbs and causing scattered electrical outages.
No other storm-related injuries were reported.
