Cardinals Sign Clayton for $3.5M
ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Shortstop Royce Clayton and the St. Louis Cardinals avoided salary arbitration by agreeing Monday to a $3.5 million, one-year contract, a raise of $850,000.
Clayton, 28, hit .266 with nine homers and 61 RBIs last year, his second full season with the Cardinals. He has a career batting average of .257 with 33 homers and 280 RBIs.
The agreement leaves only outfielder-first baseman John Mabry in arbitration. He asked for a raise from $390,000 to $1.95 million and was offered $1.2 million.
