L.A. Homelessness Challenge Awards First-ever Prizes to Venice Family Clinic and Illumination Foundation

November 27, 2018

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 27, 2018--The Watt Family Foundation, along with partner United Way of Greater Los Angeles, awarded the first-ever prizes for the L.A. Homelessness Challenge to two Southern California-based nonprofits: the Venice Family Clinic and the Illumination Foundation. Each organization will receive $200,000 to implement their winning proposals to provide critical services to those experiencing homelessness in L.A. County.

The L.A. Homelessness Challenge was created to reward scalable service models and game-changing solutions to serve those experiencing homelessness in L.A. County. Los Angeles currently has the largest population of chronically homeless residents in the nation, a distinction that has become a rallying point for people fighting against this growing crisis.

The Venice Family Clinic will use the grant to bring medicine to thousands of homeless residents by building a training institute for residents, doctors, and nurses so that more homeless residents can be properly treated.

The Illumination Foundation will help provide housing to the most medically fragile homeless residents and older adults by creating six Micro Communities of shared housing with specialized, supportive services, such as case management, counseling, life skills training, and medical oversight.

The award-winners were chosen out of a pool of 40 applicants following a competitive selection process. Winners were announced at a ‘shark-tank’ style event in which five finalists pitched their proposals to a panel of judges and a live audience.

The five finalists chosen to present their models were the Child Care Resource Center, People Assisting the Homeless, Safe Place for Youth, Illumination Foundation, and the Venice Family Clinic.

“We are absolutely thrilled to award the Venice Family Clinic and the Illumination Foundation with the first L.A. Homelessness Challenge prizes,” said Nadine Watt, President of Watt Companies. “We are hopeful that this funding will help bring these innovative, thoughtful ideas to life, and provide assistance to many individuals currently experiencing homelessness. Our deepest thanks to all the groups that applied-- every proposal showcased an inspiring commitment to helping ease the homelessness crisis and made us hopeful for a better future.”
