Plane Evacuated, Airport Closed After Bomb Joke

January 6, 1992

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) _ A USAir plane was evacuated and Lynchburg Municipal Airport was closed for more than an hour after a passenger made a joke about a bomb.

″The flight attendant going through offered to take his briefcase and he made a remark, something to the effect of, ’Let me make sure it’s right so it doesn’t go off,‴ said David E. Blain, airport manager.

Police were called on Sunday and blocked three main roads leading to the airport.

Blain would not identify the man, a passenger on Flight 3044 to Pittsburgh, saying the FBI and police had interviewed him and decided against filing charges.

″No threat was intended, it was just a poor choice of words,″ Blain said.

The embarrassed passenger, one of 17 on the plane, apologized and boarded a later flight to Pittsburgh, Blain said.
