BROWNSTOWN _ An organization that promotes the separation of church and state wants a southern Indiana county to immediately remove a Nativity scene from a courthouse lawn. The (Seymour) Tribune reports an attorney for the Madison, Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote a letter to commissioners in Jackson County saying that a “concerned local citizen” contacted the group about the light display outside the courthouse in Brownstown. _ NATURE PRESERVE-BODY: Competency evaluations will be reviewed for a man charged in the fatal shootings of a woman whose body was found in an abandoned rural central Indiana farmhouse and a man found slain at a nature preserve. The Herald Bulletin reports the update comes after 38-year-old Daniel Lee Jones of Anderson appeared in court Wednesday and decided to retain a public defender instead of representing himself.
_ POLICE SHOOTING-INDIANA: Authorities say a southwestern Indiana man has died in a gunfight with police. Indiana State Police say preliminary autopsy results show 24-year-old David Frederick of Vincennes died of multiple gunshot wounds.
_ STUDEBAKER PLATE: Indiana is introducing a new license plate to honor Studebaker cars and trucks, starting Jan. 1. The South Bend Tribune reports that the plate will have the Studebaker red ball logo. It will also say “Studebaker Museum” along the bottom.
_ PURDUE SCHOLARSHIP: Purdue University is creating a scholarship in the name of a former student whose fight against cancer has inspired people across the country.
CLEMSON, S.C. _ Amari Rodgers was a freshman trying to fit into Clemson’s plans a year ago when the Tigers opened practice for the College Football Playoff. He didn’t have to go far to have any questions answered. “Last year, it was my first time, so I was kind of asking around, Deon Cain and Ray Ray (McCloud), how they prepared for it because they won a national championship the year before,” Rodgers said. “So I just followed their ways.” By Sports Writer Pete Iacobelli.
