NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) _ Johnny Carson will give $500,000 to the library foundation in his hometown.

The retired host of ``The Tonight Show'' notified the foundation this week that he would donate the money for its endowment fund.

Carson has made numerous contributions over the years to local projects including the Carson Regional Cancer Center and the Johnny Carson Theatre at Norfolk High School.

``He has been so good to this community that you begin to wonder whether you should ask him for anything more,'' said Karen Warner, chairwoman of the foundation's board.

Carson didn't seem to mind. In fact he added a postscript to his letter, asking if the library had any new books on humor or magic.

The foundation will purchase two sets of new books on magic, one for the library and the other for Carson.
