No. 20 Stanford Whips UC Irvine 72-59
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) _ Chris Hernandez scored a career-high 22 points to lead No. 20 Stanford, which took a huge early lead and cruised to a 72-59 victory Tuesday night over UC Irvine.
Hernandez made six of seven shots from 3-point range for the Cardinal (2-0).
Adam Parada led the Anteaters (2-2) with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Teammates Stanislav Zuzak, Matt Okoro and Mike Efevberha added 10 points apiece.
Stanford made nine of its first 13 shots to build a 24-5 lead with 11:51 left in the first half. Hernandez led the spree with 10 points.
UC Irvine did not score for the first 2:58 and did not make a basket in the first 4:20.
The Anteaters narrowed the deficit to 27-19 with 5:58 left in the first half, as the Cardinal failed to make a basket for nearly 7 1/2 minutes. But UC Irvine scored just one more basket the rest of the half, and Stanford led 48-25 at the break.
Cardinal forward Josh Childress, a preseason All American, missed his second consecutive game with a stress reaction in his left foot. Childress averaged 14.1 points last season.
