LOWELL -- Police arrested a man accused of stealing a man’s wallet after asking him for money outside a liquor store on Bridge Street Tuesday night, according to Capt. James Hodgdon.

Rudy Martinez, 31, of 123 Third St., was charged with unarmed robbery, assault, and resisting arrest.

According to police, a man later identified as Martinez asked a man entering Manning Liquor on 427 Bridge St. for a dollar. When the man removed his wallet to give Martinez money, Martinez grabbed the wallet, Hodgdon said. In a short scuffle, police said the victim pulled off Martinez’s sweatshirt.

Police were called to the scene at 7:41 p.m. After reviewing security tape from the liquor store, police recognized Martinez who they knew from previous interactions, according to Hodgdon. He said police went to Martinez’s home with the victim, who positively identified Martinez as the person who took his wallet.

Hodgdon said the police report does not indicate whether the wallet was recovered.

This is a developing story.
