BoSox’s Fassero Sent to Bullpen

August 31, 2000

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Boston Red Sox manager Jimy Williams has reworked his starting rotation for the second time in three days, sending Jeff Fassero to the bullpen and replacing him with Pete Schourek.

The move was announced after Fassero allowed three runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings of the Red Sox’s 3-1 loss Wednesday night to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

``Manager’s decision,″ Williams said. ``So Fassero will have to help us out of the bullpen, which I really think he can as a left-hander.″

Fassero, who complained after being pulled in the sixth inning of his previous outing Friday at Kansas City, declined comment.

Schourek, currently on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder soreness, threw in the bullpen before Wednesday’s game.

``I’m happy to be starting,″ Schourek said. ``I’ve got a lot of confidence. I like the way I’m throwing. I had a good side session today. As far as pain and discomfort, it’s at a minimum right now.″

Williams dropped Tim Wakefield from the rotation Monday.

``I do not look at this as a demotion,″ Williams said. ``We have more veteran pitchers in our bullpen. I think that makes us stronger.″

Wakefield’s replacement, Ramon Martinez, is scheduled to start Saturday against Seattle.
