Va Tech beats Notre Dame...More draft decisions...Dallas to host next year’s Winter Classic
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Ty Outlaw hit three 3-pointers in a 22-9 second-half run and No. 10 Virginia Tech beat Notre Dame 81-66 today. Kerry Blackshear Jr. led the way with 21 points, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Ahmed Hill scored 17 apiece and Outlaw finished with 14 for the Hokies. T.J. Gibbs scored 19 points, 13 in the second half, as Notre Dame had its four-game winning streak snapped.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is skipping his final season to enter the NFL draft. The school announced the redshirt junior’s decision today, less than 24 hours after the Wolfpack lost to Texas A&M in the Gator Bowl. Meyers went to N.C. State as a quarterback but moved to receiver and set a single-season school receptions record with 92 catches for 1,047 yards this year.
STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Stanford tight end Kaden Smith has announced he will skip his final season of college to enter the NFL draft. Smith had 47 catches for 635 yards and two touchdowns this season for the Cardinal. He missed the final three games of the season with a foot injury.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami linebacker Shaquille Quarterman has decided the NFL can wait. Quarterman says he is returning to the Hurricanes for his final season of eligibility. His decision means all three Miami primary linebackers this season — Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud — will be back in 2019 for their senior year.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The 2020 Winter Classic will be held at the Cotton Bowl in Texas. The Dallas Stars will host the 12th edition of the NHL’s annual outdoor game next New Year’s Day. Their opponent remains to be determined. Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement during the second intermission of today’s Winter Classic between the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks.
