Three Prisoners Found Dead After Apparent Drug Overdose

November 18, 1988

JERUSALEM (AP) _ Three Israeli prisoners were found dead in their cell Friday after apparently overdosing on drugs smuggled into the prison, officials said.

Two other inmates sharing the cell at Damoun Prison in northern Israel were found unconscious but later recovered, said Johnny Tester, a spokesman for the Prisons Service.

Tester said the three prisoners who died, all in their 30s, were in prison for drug use and trafficking. He also said one of the inmates returned from leave two days ago and was believed to have smuggled the drugs into the prison.

All five were found lying in their beds when guards checked the cell at 8:15 a.m., Tester said.

Two other inmates also shared the cell and were being questioned by police, he said.

Tester noted that the seven men were being held in a special section set aside for prisoners whose lives had been threatened, usually because they served as informants.

″Police are checking whether there is a murder motive,″ Tester told The Associated Press. ″But we think they probably had a cocktail of drugs ... and overdosed.″
