CART Driver Recovers From Surgery
HILLIARD, Ohio (AP) _ Bryan Herta, who drives for Team Rahal in the CART series, will be sidelined at least a week while recovering from an emergency appendectomy, the team announced Tuesday.
The operation occurred Monday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Herta’s hometown of Valencia, Calif. The team’s general manager, Scott Roembke, said Herta was resting comfortably at home and is expected to be driving in the season’s opening race March 21 at Homestead, Fla.
Herta, 28, was hospitalized after suffering abdominal pains late Saturday.
He will be in his fourth year with Team Rahal and sixth year on the CART circuit this season. Max Papis will replace Bobby Rahal as the other driver for the team, based in this Columbus suburb.
Rahal retired as a driver at the end of last year after 16 CART seasons and remains the team’s principal owner, with comedian David Letterman as minority owner.
