COMMENTARY State leaders’ grandiose tax swap became a tax flop
The great tax swap plan for the Texas Legislature turned into the great tax flop. A few weeks after it was rolled out, it was rolled away. Just four days after “the Big Three” — Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dennis Bonnen — confidently said they had the votes to ram it through, it was pulled from the House schedule.
You’d have to go back quite some time to find a similar reversal so abrupt and embarrassing to the state’s leaders. But perhaps it should have been expected, because anytime you’re talking about fiddling with tax rates, you’re strolling into a political minefield. A lot could go wrong, and the path to victory is narrow and uncertain.
