DISTRICT 2 TENNIS ROUNDUP: Royals Advance; Dallas, Coughlin Eliminated

At Kirby Park in a Disctrict 2 Class 2A quarterfinal, Holy Redeemeer swept singles play, added one doubles win and eliminated Tunkhannock with a 4-2 victory.

Camryn Cassetori, Tea Amerise and Cassie Benderavich were all singles winners for the Royals. Sonal Garg and Carissa Benderavich won the top doubles match for Holy Redeemer. Tunkhannock’s Ashley Kenia and Jordana Bach won second doubles.

The third-seeded Royals will play in a semifinal 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kirby Park against either second-seeded Scranton Prep or No. 7 Western Wayne, who play their quarterfinal on Monday.

SINGLES: 1. Camryn Cassetori (HR) over Jillian Langdon 6-1, 6-2; 2. Tea Amerise (HR) over Jenna Laughinghouse 6-2, 6-0; 3. Cassie Benderavich (HR) over Megan Keiser 6-0, 6-4.

DOUBLES: 1. Sonal Garg/Carissa Benderavich (HR) over Emily Martin/Naomi Strohl 6-3, 6-2; 2. Ashley Kenia/Jordana Bach (TUN) over Jenna Biago/Jordan Stochala 6-0, 6-4.

Holy Cross 5, Dallas 0

At Holy Cross, fourth-seeded Holy Cross blanked fifth-seeded Dallas in a District 2 Class 2A quarterfinal.

Holy Cross next plays Wyoming Seminary in a semifinal on Tuesday. 


North Pocono 5, Coughlin 0

At North Pocono in the District 2 Class 3A quarterfinals, sixth-seeded Coughlin was eliminated by third-seeded North Pocono.

The Crusaders finish the season at 7-7.

Wyoming Area 3, Crestwood 2

At Crestwood in a regular season match, the host Comets swept doubles play, but Wyoming Area took all three singles points to earn the win.

Brianna Pizzano and Bella Scappaticci were among winners for Wyoming Area. Crestwood got wins from the teams of Shannon Griffiths and Megan McLaughlin, and Breena Kravchick and Sarah Pavlick.

Field Hockey

At Holy Redeemer, Kate Roberts scored three goals — the only goals scored in a 3-0 Lake-Lehman win against the Royals in WVC field hockey Friday.

Amy Supey, the goalkeeper for Lake-Lehman, kept Redeemer off the board by making seven saves. Redeemer goalie Meredythe Baird had eight saves.

At Keystone College, Alyssa Fowler scored three goals, Belle Coleman added two more, and Liz Litwin added a score in the Lackawanna Trail win.

Olivia Nice scored a goal for Nanticoke Area.

At Valley West, Gianna Musto had 22 kills and five digs as Dallas swept the Spartans. Emma Berger had 30 assists and eight service points in the win. Sam Michael had 15 service points, five assists and five kills.

Trinity Johnson had 4 kills and four blocks for Valley West.

At Dallas on Thursday, the Mountaineers hit 10-0 on the season with a quick 3-0 win over the Hawkeyes.

Michael and Musto each lined 10 kills for Dallas. Berger tossed up 27 assists and served eight aces.

Boys Soccer

At Holy Redeemer, the Royals got a ha t trick from Jimmy Dunleavy, two goals from Alex Rymar and four assists from Lucas Barnak in a 6-3 win over GAR on Friday in WVC boys soccer.

College Field Hockey

At Schmidt Stadium, Wilkes couldn’t come away with a victory on senior night, falling to FDU-Florham in overtime, 1-0.

It was the first MAC Freedom loss for Wilkes who drops to 2-1, 6-6 overall.

The game remained scoreless through regulation with Wilkes goalkeeper Dallas Kendra making nine saves.

FDU-Florham won the game with a goal in the 72nd minnute from Jessica Pietracatella.
