Convicted Mafioso Killed While Sleeping In Hospital Bed

December 3, 1988

SIRACUSA, Sicily (AP) _ Gunmen slipped into a hospital and killed a convicted Mafia member while he slept, police reported today.

Fearing an attack, the victim, Angelo Bottaro, had kept a pistol hidden in his bedclothes, the Italian news agency ANSA quoted investigators as saying.

Investigators said the killers apparently entered the hospital through a ground floor window and shot Bottaro with pistols and rifles, ANSA reported.

The assailants escaped.

The news agency said Bottaro, 39, claimed during several trials that he was insane and had recently requested neurological treatment at the hospital.

Bottaro had been convicted of several crimes, including murders connected to the underworld and of belonging to the Mafia.
