ATLANTA (AP) _ Republican presidential candidate Lamar Alexander joined the ribbing of Al Gore today by pointing out that the vice president, who has claimed credit for the Internet, isn't the only inventive Tennesseean.

``It is true that I, Lamar Alexander, invented plaid,'' Alexander told the Atlanta Rotary Club, prompting laughter. ``I created, myself, the fabric that makes our nation great.''

Alexander, a former Tennessee governor who also ran for president in 1996, was often seen that year in folksy television commercials wearing plaid shirts.

Gore was widely lampooned by Republicans last week after he claimed to have invented the Internet. His comment prompted Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., to claim credit for the paper clip.
