Mass. Man Kills Wife, Wounds Self
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) _ A man fatally shot his estranged wife twice in the head in front of police headquarters before critically wounding himself, officials said.
Witnesses said that at about noon Monday the man walked up to his wife on a downtown street, turned her around and shot her twice ``at very close range,″ prosecutor David Angier said.
When she fell, he shot himself.
Police recovered a revolver.
Authorities identified the couple as Jean Hosmer, 45, of Pelham, and William J. Bernotas, 46, of Sunderland.
Bernotas was in critical condition today at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, according to a hospital spokesman.
Just before the shooting, Hosmer had extended a restraining order against her husband in Hampshire County Probate Court, a half-block from the site of the shooting, according to District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel.
Angier said the couple was in the process of a divorce. He said they had two daughters, aged 15 and 11.
