Bus Plunges From Overpass in Rome
ROME (AP) _ A public bus Saturday plunged some 50 feet from an overpass not far from Rome’s main airport, and many people were reportedly injured.
The Italian news agency AP.Biscom quoted unidentified fire officials as saying at least 20 people were injured.
Eva Berto, a doctor in the emergency room of Sant’Eugenio hospital, told The Associated Press that ambulance dispatchers reported lots of injured victims being taken to several hospitals, including Sant’Eugenio. She said none of the victims had yet arrived.
Italian news reports said the bus was traveling from the town of Fiumicino, near Leonardo da Vinci airport, when it broke through a guardrail and fell off the elevated road, landing on its side in a field near a hotel and near the entrances and exits to the main road linking the Italian capital to the airport.
The Italian news agency AGI said helicopters were ferrying some of the injured to Rome hospitals.
