BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian during an overnight raid in the West Bank, a Palestinian official said Tuesday.

Bethlehem Governor Jebren al-Bakri said 19-year-old Jihad al-Jafari was shot in the chest Tuesday morning on the roof of his house in the Deheisha refugee camp as he was watching an Israeli raid below. Palestinian TV showed footage of the body being taken to hospital.

The Israeli military said troops on a "routine activity" were attacked with rocks and firebombs in the camp. It said the troops tried to "disperse the turmoil" and, feeling their lives were in danger, opened fire. It said one Israeli soldier was lightly wounded in the clash.

Israeli troops often carry out overnight raids in the West bank searching for suspected militants.
