Small Quake Shakes Part of San Bernardino-Riverside Region
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) _ A small earthquake shook an inland area of Southern California on Saturday, but no damage was reported, authorities said.
The 6:22 a.m. quake was centered 23 miles southeast of San Bernardino and measured 3.2 on the Richter scale of ground motion, said Robert Finn, spokesman for the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
Sheriff’s dispatchers in Yucaipa, 75 miles east of Los Angeles, and San Bernardino received no reports of damage. A dispatcher in adjacent Riverside County said the quake wasn’t strong enough to wake sleepers.
The quake was measured at 3.7 on the Richter scale at the National Earthquake Information Center at Golden, Colo., said geophysicist Waverly Person. Discrepancies between local and distant measurements are common.
The Richter scale is a measure of ground motion as recorded on seismographs.E very increase of one number means a tenfold increase in magnitude. An earthquake of 3.5 on the scale can cause slight damage in the local area, 4 moderate damage.
