Gramigni Wins at Road America
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) _ Alessandro Gramigni of Italy rode an Italian-made Ducati to victory Sunday in the AMA Superbike final at Road America.
The 27-year-old former 125cc Grand Prix World Champion used his wet riding skills to take over the lead from Yamaha’s Tom Kipp on lap four of the 16-lap race.
Gramigni held on to beat series leader Doug Chandler by three seconds. It was Ducati’s first win in the AMA Superbike Series since May 1995.
Defending AMA Superbike champion Miguel Duhamel made a poor tire choice on his Honda and barely ran inside the top 10 for most of the race. In the closing laps Duhamel charged through the field in drying conditions to finish fifth behind Australian Mat Mladin on a Suzuki.
Chandler’s second-place finish extended his points lead over Duhamel to 19, after six of 10 races. The next round is at New Hampshire International Speedway on June 16.
