January 20, 1996

NEW YORK (AP) _ Corey Albano scored 12 of Monmouth’s first 18 points as the Hawks raced to an early lead before coasting to a 71-55 victory Saturday over Long Island University to remain unbeaten in the Northeast Conference.

The victory was the sixth straight for Monmouth (9-5, 6-0), which also got 14 points from Mustafa Barksdale. The Hawks took an 18-6 lead on the strength of Albano’s play, and led 35-22 at halftime.

Jason Feeley had 24 points for the Blackbirds (4-9, 1-4). Robin Dickerson added 10 rebounds, nine rebounds and five blocks.

After Monmouth took its early lead, Feeley’s 3-point basket with 6:58 left in the first half enabled LIU to close to 18-11. But the Blackbirds got no closer thereafter.

The Hawks led 43-29, then put the game out of reach with a 23-13 spurt to a 66-42 advantage with 1:53 remaining. Barksdale scored six points in the run.
