ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) _ Michigan hired former quarterback Scot Loeffler as an assistant coach Tuesday.

Loeffler, who will be quarterbacks coach, was a student coach on Michigan's 1997 national championship team and a graduate assistant in 1998 and 1999.

He helped Brian Griese, Scott Dreisbach and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady reach the NFL.

Loeffler, 27, was a five-year member of the Michigan program. He backed up quarterback Todd Collins until a shoulder injury cut short his playing career.

Loeffler returns to Michigan after two seasons as quarterbacks coach at Central Michigan.
