Police seek help IDing man tied to Legion killing

January 8, 2019

Fort Wayne police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a person of interest in connection with a homicide that happened nearly six months ago at the American Legion post on Lewis Street.

Authorities on Monday released a black-and-white surveillance photograph of a man wearing dark pants and a light-colored shirt. Those who recognize him are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 260-436-7867.

Police did not provide additional identifying details, such as the man’s approximate height, weight or age.

The man is being sought in connection with the homicide of Michael Carter, 40, who was fatally shot about 1:50 a.m. July 29 at the American Legion in the 700 block of East Lewis Street.

At least a dozen people were in the parking lot at the Legion that night, including two others who were critically injured.

Witnesses told police there was an altercation indoors that involved several people, who were removed from the building. Shortly afterward, they reported hearing gunshots from the parking lot.
