Co-Big Ten Hoop Stars Are Chosen

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) _ Michigan State’s Mateen Cleaves and Ohio State’s Scoonie Penn were chosen co-Big Ten players of the year on today.

Cleaves, who won the award for the second straight season, was the choice of conference coaches. Penn was selected by reporters who cover the Big Ten.

Jim O’Brien was chosen coach of the year for his dramatic turnaround at Ohio State, which is 22-7 and nationally ranked after winning just eight games last year.

Illinois guard Cory Bradford was voted Big Ten freshman of the year by both the coaches and media, and Wisconsin guard Mike Kelley was chosen by coaches as the defensive player of the year.

Cleaves, who led Michigan State to its second straight Big Ten title, and Penn also lead the All-Big Ten first team. Joining them are: Northwestern’s Evan Eschmeyer, Minnesota’s Quincy Lewis and Michigan State’s Morris Peterson.
