Popular Panda Pop Put Under Observation
MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Pe-Pe, the father of Mexico’s beloved panda family, was put under medical observation after two tumors were found, the director of the Chapultepec Zoo said Wednesday.
″It is a matter of two inflamed tumors, but we have just about discounted the idea that it could be cancer,″ Maria Elena Hoyo said.
China gave Pe-Pe and his mate, Ying-Ying, to Mexico in September 1975. They have four surviving offspring by natural conception, the largest such panda family outside of China.
Ms. Hoyo said a general examination is planned April 11 or 12 to determine what caused the tumors.
She said the 13-year-old panda weighs 249 pounds, down from his usual 275 to 285 pounds. Pandas have a life expectancy of about 20 years.
