Volleyball: D’Hanis lands second straight state berth
Chloe Cowan had 22 kills and Victoria Carter added nine kills, three aces and two blocks as D’Hanis topped Fayetteville 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23 Saturday in Brenham to secure its second straight trip to the UIL state tournament.
The Cowgirls (32-13) used tough serving, racking up 11 aces to prevail. Hanna Martinez had threes aces and Dany Bernal added two.
Setter Cassandra Zerr had 37 assists for D’Hanis, which will be joined at the state tournament by Water Valley, Bryson and Nesches. Water Valley defeated defending state champion Bronte in the Region I-A final. Bronte outlasted D’Hanis in five sets in last year’s state semifinals.
Region IV-5A: At South San, Dripping Springs bounced back from a first-set loss and defeated Boerne Champion 27-29, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20.
The Chargers (30-13) led 23-20 in a pivotal third set and was on the cusp of taking a 2-1 advantage in the match before Dripping Springs reeled off five unanswered points to capture the frame.
The teams were tied at 14 in the fourth set when Dripping Springs put together a mini-run to gain a cushion that it wouldn’t relinquish.
Hannah Maddux had 22 kills to lead Champion, which was in its second regional final and first since 2012. Setter Sydney Spaulding had 38 assists and Ashley Brin totaled 12 digs.
