No. 10 Vanderbilt 98, S. Carolina 58
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) _ Freshman Lisa Ostrom scored 20 points and No. 10 Vanderbilt dominated the boards in downing South Carolina 98-58 Sunday.
Vanderbilt ended the regular season 23-6, 8-3 in the Southeastern Conference, in earning the No. 2 seed in the league tournament, which starts Friday in Chattanooga.
The Commodores outrebounded South Carolina (11-15, 1-10) 45-23 in handing the Gamecocks their worst loss of the season and 10th straight in the SEC.
Sheri Sam added 14 points for the Commodores, and Kelly Dougherty had 12.
South Carolina kept the game close early, leading 14-13. The Gamecocks made a brief run at the start of the second half to pull within 46-34 but never really threatened the much taller Commodores.
Vandy used a 16-0 run midway through the second half that stretched the edge to 62-34. Ostrom, a 6-foot-2 guard in her second start, made eight of 12 shots.
Shannon Johnson led South Carolina with 23 points, and Christy Timmons had 10.
The victory also marked the 100th for Jim Foster in four seasons as Vanderbilt’s coach.
Vanderbilt will have a bye in the SEC tournament’s first round and will play Saturday against Mississippi or Mississippi State. South Carolina will play Arkansas in Friday’s first round.
