AMHERST, Mass. (AP) _ Massachusetts basketball coach Steve Lappas has had his contract extended for one year, through the 2006-07 season.

``We are pleased with the direction our men’s basketball program is headed,″ athletic director Ian McCaw said. ``Coach Lappas and his staff have done an outstanding job recruiting very talented student-athletes, and we are looking for great things in the coming years under his leadership.″

The Minutemen were 13-16 last season, Lappas’ first at the university. Lappas, who also coached at Manhattan and Villanova, has a 243-188 career record.

Lappas left Villanova last March to take the UMass job, replacing Bruiser Flint, who had resigned under pressure.

Lappas was 174-110 at Villanova in nine seasons with four NCAA tournament berths and three in the NIT.

``We’ve laid a solid foundation for future success, and I’m confident we will reach the goals we have set for this program.″ Lappas said.
