Mexican leader Veracruz held to 0-0 draw by Puebla

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Veracruz stayed atop the Mexican league on Sunday despite being held to a 0-0 draw against Puebla.

Second-place Morelia also drew 0-0 with third-place Leon on Saturday, while Santos Laguna improved to fourth after its 2-2 draw against Toluca on Sunday.

In other games this weekend, Cruz Azul defeated Chivas 3-1, Atlas drew 1-1 with Pachuca, America won 4-2 against Atlante, Tigres beat local rivals Monterrey 3-1, Tijuana overcame Pumas 2-0 and Queretaro drew 1-1 against Chiapas.

Puebla had the best chances and the larger slice of possession against Veracruz, but missed a number of opportunities, the best of which fell to Argentine Alfredo Moreno in the 23rd minute.

Edy Brambila netted the equalizer in the 90th minute to hand Toluca a point against Santos.

Santos had launched a second-half comeback with goals from Javier Orozco and Oribe Peralta, after Carlos Esquivel had given Toluca the lead in the 13th.

Ecuadorian Joao Rojas put Cruz Azul into the lead in the 35th and scored the team’s second in the 78th, after Rafa Marquez Lugo had equalized for Chivas with a penalty in the 51st. Jeronimo Amione added the third eight minutes from the final whistle.

Matias Vuoso rescued a draw for Atlas when he scored deep into second half injury time. Pachuca had taken the lead through Argentine Fernando Cavenaghi in the 61st.

America came from behind after Alberto Garcia had put Atlante in the lead in the 58th. Francisco Rodriguez equalized in the 67th, with Ecuadorian Narciso Mina adding the second from close range two minutes later. Diego Jimenez brought the scores level in the 74th, before two late goals from Raul Jimenez and Colombian Andres Andrade sealed the victory for America.

Fidel Martinez headed in Tijuana’s opener in the 10th, with Raul Enriquez adding the second from a corner in the 59th.

Alan Pulido scored twice in the first half for Tigres, either side of Humberto Suazo’s 22nd-minute equalizer for Monterrey, with Lucas Lobos adding the third in the 81st.

Queretaro salvaged a point in injury time when Carlos Ochoa netted from the penalty spot. Esteban Paredes had put Queretaro into the lead
