Man Must Pay $5M for Giving Ex HIV
YORK, S.C. (AP) _ A judge has ordered a man to pay his former girlfriend $5 million for infecting her with the AIDS virus.
Judge Buford Greer awarded $1 million in actual damages and $4 million in punitive damages to the woman Wednesday.
The woman, identified in court papers as Jane Doe, received a verdict in her favor in November after her former boyfriend failed to show up to defend himself. The man, identified only as John Doe, did not appear for the damages hearing either.
``I hope this verdict sends a message to people that you can’t do this,″ the woman’s lawyer, Randall Hood, said Wednesday. ``If you are HIV-positive, it is your duty to inform your partner.″
The lawsuit contends the man never told the woman he had HIV _ the virus that causes AIDS _ when they began dating five years ago.
Hood said the woman had a long-term, monogamous relationship with the man, but the man had a grudge against women and decided to infect her.
Hood said there may be other victims, but no one else has stepped forward.
